When you're off the clock, you may have a go-to podcast you indulge in purely for entertainment. But when it comes to podcasts to help you in your day-to-day sales career, finding the right listen can be overwhelming.
Getting invested in a great sales storyteller is fun. But aside from the fun anecdotes (which, hey, are also important!), are the hosts just reiterating the same sales 101 tips you learned as a new BDR? That's often the case.
When you're putting your feelers out into the podcast-verse, consider the following to determine which shows are actually going to be helpful:
If the sales podcast of your choice is over-explaining what a discovery call is and what BANT stands for, it might lean a little too juvenile for you to grow your skills as a seller.
But if the podcast covers how AI is shaping the industry, what the best strategies are to balance a growing buying committee, and which tools are a must-have for a sales workflow, it might be better to tune in each week.
Every seller has a slightly different knowledge base and skill set. A great rule of thumb here is to listen to the episode and think about how much you've actually learned versus how much was reiterated to make you feel smart. New learning trumps repeated tips every time.
Where do you get your sales news?
There are always top stories on LinkedIn and whispers in the bullpen, but podcasts are a great way to get a zoomed-out look at industry news. Think about the current events your go-to sales podcast discusses. Are the stories old or irrelevant news at the time of publishing?
The news cycle isn't the most important thing for a sales podcast to cover, but digging up outdated or irrelevant stories certainly isn't a great use of your listening time, either.
And now, for the fun stuff.
Do the hosts you listen to drive you to be a better seller? Or are you just listening because your leaders listen, and you want to stay in the loop?
The latter might be reason enough to tune in, but finding sales podcasts that actually engage you and keep your attention is going to provide much more value. Moments to laugh, to think, and to feel inspired are the ones that stick with you long-term. This one might take some trial and error, as it's subjective, but it's worth the search.
Attention spans, thanks to the onslaught of content everywhere, are shorter than they used to be. So spend your attention on something you enjoy. We promise you'll get a lot more out of it.
Here at Pod, the team listens to a mix of sales podcasts. Some weigh heavier on the news, some on stories, but at the end of the day, they all provide value and motivation. Some of the best of the best out there include:
